Gemma's story

When I first got my flat I was happy and looking forward to having my own space. After a wee while I began to feel stressed as I had no idea how to get my home decorated or who to turn to for help. I was worried so much that I felt like going back into supported accommodation, that way I knew what to expect and it seemed a safe place for me to be in at that time.

I was referred to the Bridges Project where I was linked into the Homemaking Service. The Homemaker, Liz, identified my needs and it wasn't long before I was in B&Q choosing my decorating materials. I found this to be an enjoyable experience deciding on what paper and paints to choose for my lounge. One of the hardest parts for me was choosing the colours as there are so many colours available! I worked my colour scheme around my furniture that way I knew it would match and look ok.

We got to work straight away stripping the WOODCHIP off the walls. Once that job was completed we sanded the walls; two weeks later I had fresh new wallpaper in my lounge. After the first coat of paint I could see it was beginning to take shape. The colour on the walls is quite light compared to what I am used to, but once everything is back in place I think it will be nice!

Several weeks down the line I have a newly decorated lounge and I am waiting on a new carpet and curtains to be fitted. Once this is complete I will have a new stylish lounge to be proud of!

Now I have the decorating bug.. I plan to come into the Bridges Project to makeover my coffee table and design a mirror for above my fireplace in my lounge.

Without the help of the Bridges Project my lounge would still have old woodchip on the walls, a scabby old carpet and most importantly I would have no desire or energy to change it myself!!

What I would say I gained from my experience is how to shop on a budget. I also learned the difference between emulsion paint and gloss paint. I now know how to prepare walls before you paper them. I also think my painting skills are quite good, so much so I feel confident enough to tackle a decorating job on my own.

I would definitely tell other young people about the service and how it has helped me turn my house into a home.
