Retail Academy - Claire Jude

I started going to the Retail Academy in October 05 after successfully passing an interview for the course.

The course lasted for 4 weeks and I learnt:

  1. how to job search
  2. things employers are looking for
  3. customer service
  4. communication skills
  5. and selling skills

I was a bit nervous at the start because I was the youngest on the course and there was quite a mixed age range but then we all went out after the first day and I made quite a few friends.

I really enjoyed the course and got a certificate at the end to prove I'd completed it. After the course finishes they are really helpful and keep in touch with you to help you find a job. They have a drop in on Thursday nights where you can get job help.

My tutor Julie got in touch with me as there was a recruitment night at Next in October and she knew I was interested so we went along together and I filled in an application form for a temporary Christmas position at Next. You had to take your passport or National Insurance number with you as they were taking all your details on the night. Whilst waiting my turn for my interview I had to answer some questions about different scenarios like 'what would you do if the shop was really busy?' and 'how would you deal with a rude customer?'. I then had my interview where they asked me some more questions about dealing with customers and my time at the retail academy.

I heard the next day that I'd got the job, which was an 8 week contract over Christmas, and I was delighted! I then had to go in for an induction where we watched some videos and had a discussion around their expectations of their staff then I was let loose in the shop.

I was in the shoes and petite section and really enjoyed my job so when I saw a poster in the staff room for permanent positions after Christmas I applied and I have been kept on as a permanent member of staff.

I really enjoy working, it gives me independence and a chance to meet new people. I've now got used to the travelling and the shifts and enjoy a staff discount on any purchases I make in the shop.
