Holes

Louis Sachar manages to put humour into the character Stanley Yelnat's life. Stanley is cursed. It all began when his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather made a promise to an old woman, and breaks it. After that, all the Yelnats following have had unlucky lives. Sachar leads the reader through a winding plot that changes from past to present through the chapters, and two stories lay themselves out.

In the present story, Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake as punishment for a crime he didn't commit. At Camp Green Lake, everybody has to dig a hole that is 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep every day. It is said to be 'character building', but Stanley suspects that the much feared Warden is looking for something important. In the past plotline, the legendary outlaw Kissin' Kate Barlow's life story is unveiled. In total, this book is a must read.
