Scotland’s Learning Partnership’s 20th Annual Awards

Roll Call of Honour for Semi-finalists

SLP Semi-finalists

On Thursday 31 March 2011 a roll call of honour for Learning Awards semi-finalists was held at Pollock Halls in Edinburgh. Among those on that roll call were Hendry Ross and Kyle Storrie – two young men who have made maximum use over the last few years of the opportunities offered at Bridges Project and who have both now moved on to full employment, self-reliance and an adult life as contributors, not only in their own family circles, but also in society.

Both young men have worked hard to overcome difficulties and disadvantages; both young men have persevered to increase their knowledge and skills; both have exposed themselves to new experiences and both have been willing to risk taking up challenges to widen their horizons.

In December, the Personal Tutor nominated Kyle and Hendry for these nationwide learning awards and both are now semi-finalists. Yesterday their achievement was celebrated in an event shared with other individuals and groups from around Scotland. They enjoyed a tasty lunch in South Hall and then took their turn to receive acclaim from their fellow award winners. Certificates were handed over by local celebrities, Alison Craig and Grant Stott, and photographs were taken to record the event. It was moving to witness the number of people who, despite the difficulties life has thrust upon them, have spent the time and made the effort to engage with learning to enrich their lives.

The event closed with more official photographs and a drinks reception, but these 20th anniversary awards will not be over until the finalists (just ten of them) are chosen (tomorrow!) and the BIG celebration is held (and, we believe, televised) on May 18th.  So, congratulations to our two Bridges Project stars, Hendry and Kyle, and we are keeping our fingers crossed that they will have their ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ on STV in six weeks’ time.

Ryan Says:

"I liked getting a shot on the electric guitar and amp. It made lots of feedback and sounded like the amp was haunted.I have been into the guitar since I was 14 and I enjoy playing together with other folk. Although I wasn’t too keen on the song we recorded at the Bridge Centre- Rock DJ by Robbie Williams we all worked together and it came out ok."
